Chapter 4 - The Trusted Guardian

The massive mercenary aimed the barrel of his shotgun directly at my chest and smiled a wicked, toothless smile.
He ordered me to slide the burner phone and the flash drive across the wet bathroom tiles.
I slowly raised my hands in surrender while desperately calculating my extremely limited options.
Before the mercenary could take another step, a deafening gunshot echoed from the diner hallway.
The mercenary collapsed heavily to the floor, revealing a tall man standing behind him with a smoking pistol.
It was Marcus, dressed in dark tactical gear and moving with terrifying military precision.
He grabbed my arm and firmly told me that we needed to leave the area immediately before more cartel members arrived.
We sprinted out the back door of the diner and jumped into a heavily armored black SUV.
Marcus stomped on the gas pedal and we sped away into the dark, rural countryside.
I frantically asked him how the cartel had managed to find me so incredibly quickly.
He explained that Brandon had undoubtedly placed a microscopic GPS tracker on my car months ago.
He told me that my entire family was deeply embedded in a violent, multi-million dollar international crime syndicate.
They needed the forty thousand dollars as a desperate legal retainer because the FBI was secretly building a case against them.
Marcus revealed that Ethan had been secretly working as a confidential informant for the federal government.
The silver flash drive was the final piece of evidence the FBI needed to completely dismantle the cartel.
I handed the drive to Marcus, feeling incredibly grateful that my husband had trusted such a capable man.
Marcus navigated the dark country roads with incredible skill and pulled into a hidden, underground parking garage.
He led me into a highly secure safehouse equipped with bulletproof glass and advanced surveillance monitors.
I finally allowed myself to relax slightly as Marcus locked the heavy steel door behind us.
He walked over to a small kitchenette and poured me a warm cup of coffee to help with my shivering.
I took a grateful sip of the coffee, but it tasted incredibly bitter and strangely metallic.
My vision immediately began to blur wildly and my knees suddenly buckled beneath my weight.

I collapsed onto the floor, completely paralyzed as Marcus calmly walked over and picked up the flash drive.
He pulled out his phone, dialed my brother's number, and quietly announced that he had secured the package.
