Chapter 8 - The Cornered Beast

I walked slowly into the lavish living room, keeping my hands visible so I wouldn't further startle the crying boys.

The twins huddled tightly together on the expensive silk sofa, looking at me with wide, terribly fearful eyes.

I demanded fiercely that my mother show me the absurd court document she was waving around.

Eleanor tossed the heavy file onto the glass coffee table with a look of supreme, untouchable arrogance.

I flipped through the pages, seeing forged medical records claiming Evelyn was an unfit, drug-addicted vagrant.

My blood boiled fiercely as I truly realized the bottomless depths of my mother's depravity.

I pulled the encrypted flash drive out of my pocket and held it up high for her to see.

I told her I had high-definition footage of her explicitly paying a hitman to cut Evelyn's brake lines.

For a brief, glorious second, Eleanor's perfectly composed mask slipped, revealing pure, unadulterated panic underneath.

She quickly recovered, laughing off my threat loudly and calling it a cheap, fabricated bluff.

She proudly reminded me that she essentially owned the police commissioner, the district attorney, and half the sitting judges in the city.

Just as she spoke, the deafening wail of multiple police sirens echoed fiercely through the long gravel driveway.

Red and blue lights flashed brightly through the towering floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate.

I felt a massive surge of triumph, thinking my security chief had finally managed to call in honest federal backup.

The heavy front doors burst open aggressively, and heavily armed SWAT officers flooded rapidly into the room.

I stepped forward eagerly to hand them the flash drive containing the damning evidence.

Instead, the lead officer unholstered his weapon rapidly and aimed it directly at my chest.

He loudly declared that I was under immediate arrest for the kidnapping of two minors and grand corporate embezzlement.
