Chapter 1 - The Restraining Order

The silence between Evelyn and me felt heavier than the cold marble floors beneath our feet.

She held her boys so tightly that her knuckles turned stark white under the harsh airport lighting.

I took a shaky breath and asked her what she meant when she mentioned my mother.

Evelyn let out a bitter, exhausted laugh that didn't reach her haunted eyes.

She reached into her scuffed blue suitcase with trembling hands while keeping her gaze fixed on me.

My heart hammered against my ribs as she pulled out a thick, wrinkled manila envelope.

She handed me a heavily creased piece of paper bearing the official seal of Cook County.

I stared at the document in absolute, paralyzing horror.

It was a legally binding restraining order forbidding me from coming within five hundred feet of Evelyn or her unborn children.

At the bottom of the page was my exact, distinct signature in blue ink.

I looked up, my voice barely a whisper as I swore to her that I never signed this document.

Before she could answer, my phone buzzed with an urgent call from my CFO regarding the Boston deal.

I declined the call immediately and texted him to cancel the entire multi-million dollar acquisition.

Evelyn’s eyes widened in profound shock as she realized I was throwing away my empire just to stand there with her.

Then, her youngest boy tugged at her frayed sleeve and pointed a tiny, trembling finger at me.

He asked his mother if this was the bad man who wanted to take them away forever.
