Chapter 4 - The Intercept

Pure adrenaline surged through my veins as I realized the immense danger we were trapped in.
I quietly locked the deadbolt and engaged the heavy steel security latch with a soft click.
I turned to Evelyn and ordered her to barricade herself in the reinforced master bathroom with the twins.
She nodded silently, her face pale with absolute terror as she ran to grab the heavily sleeping boys.
I grabbed a heavy solid bronze statue from the console table and positioned myself out of sight behind the door.
Suddenly, the electronic lock beeped green, signaling that someone had just used an override master keycard.
The heavy door swung open slowly, and the man stepped carefully into the dim foyer.
I didn't give him a single second to raise his weapon or scan the room.
I swung the bronze statue with all my strength, striking his wrist and sending the gun clattering across the marble floor.
He grunted in pain but quickly lunged at me with startling, predatory speed.
We crashed hard into the wall, shattering a large decorative mirror into a thousand jagged pieces.
I managed to pin him to the ground, pressing my forearm violently against his throat.
I demanded to know who sent him and what he wanted with my family.
He laughed maliciously, spitting dark red blood onto the pristine white rug.
He told me I was completely out of my league and that Eleanor Vance always tied up her loose ends.
I reached into his trench coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavily encrypted flash drive.
I shoved him forcefully toward the door, ordering him to tell my mother that I was coming for her throat.
After he stumbled out, I locked the door and immediately plugged the drive into my laptop.
The screen flickered to life, displaying a hidden folder titled with my full legal name.

I clicked on the first video file, expecting to find surveillance footage of my hotel or my daily routine.
Instead, it was a high-resolution video of my mother paying a mechanic to tamper with the brakes of the car I had rented for Evelyn all those years ago.
