Chapter 7 - The Hostage

Bile rose violently in my throat as the devastating reality washed over me.

I slammed hard on the brakes, pulling the armored SUV erratically into a dark, abandoned alleyway.

I checked Evelyn's pulse, sobbing in pure relief when I felt a steady beat beneath her cold skin.

She had been heavily tranquilized, but she was definitely alive.

I frantically searched the vehicle, trying desperately to figure out how someone had bypassed my elite security detail.

I noticed a blinking red light taped under the dashboard, realizing my mother had tracked the car long before we even got in.

My mother’s right-hand man had likely ambushed them during the brief, chaotic moment I was clearing the final stairwell.

I grabbed Evelyn’s phone from her coat pocket and checked its location history, praying they took her bag too.

The GPS tracker showed a blinking blue dot moving rapidly toward the wealthy, heavily wooded suburbs of the North Shore.

They were taking my boys directly to Eleanor’s highly fortified private estate.

I left Evelyn hidden safely in the locked, bulletproof car and sprinted frantically to a nearby taxi stand.

I shoved a crumpled hundred-dollar bill at the driver and screamed the address of my childhood home.

The massive iron gates of the Vance estate were wide open when we arrived, almost as if they were welcoming me to my own execution.

I sprinted aggressively across the manicured lawn and kicked open the massive oak front doors.

I froze in the grand foyer, staring in absolute disbelief at the scene unfolding in the living room.

Eleanor was sitting gracefully in an antique armchair, happily feeding my terrified sons warm chocolate chip cookies.

She looked up at me with a sickeningly triumphant smile and held up a thick legal document stamped by a federal judge.

She calmly announced that she was now their sole legal guardian due to the biological parents' severe criminal negligence.
