Chapter 6 - The Decoy

I threw the phone aggressively against the wall, watching it shatter into jagged pieces on the floor.

I had less than three hours until midnight to outsmart the most ruthless woman in Chicago.

Evelyn asked me what we were going to do, her voice shaking with undeniable panic.

I looked deeply into her eyes and told her I was choosing them over the massive empire I had built.

I grabbed my encrypted backup tablet and aggressively began transferring all my liquid assets into an untraceable offshore trust in Evelyn's name.

I needed to ensure they would be financially protected forever even if my mother managed to destroy me.

Next, I called my loyal head of hotel security, a heavily decorated former Marine named Davis.

I instructed Davis to initiate a full building lockdown and create a massive decoy convoy in the underground garage.

He assured me he would physically block the service elevators so child protective services couldn't reach our floor.

I helped Evelyn pack up the boys, wrapping them tightly in warm blankets to hide their faces from the cameras.

We moved silently down the concrete emergency stairwell, the echo of our footsteps perfectly masked by the wailing fire alarms Davis had triggered.

We reached the sub-basement safely and piled quickly into a discreet, heavily armored SUV.

I felt a brief wave of immense relief as we merged smoothly into the chaotic Chicago traffic unnoticed.

I turned to the backseat to check on Evelyn and the frightened twins.

My heart stopped completely when I saw that the back passenger doors were slightly ajar.

Evelyn was unconscious, slumped against the leather seats with a small tranquilizer dart sticking out of her neck.

The car seats beside her were completely empty.

My children were gone.
