Chapter 6 - The Informant

Rachel did not hesitate for a single second.
She quickly grabbed her car keys, threw a dark hooded jacket over her head, and slipped out the back door.
The abandoned parking garage on 5th Avenue was pitch black and eerily silent.
She drove her father’s old sedan slowly up to the very top floor, her headlights cutting through the thick fog.
A small, nervous figure was standing completely alone near the concrete ledge.
Rachel parked the car, leaving the headlights shining brightly on the mysterious stranger, and cautiously stepped out.
It was Sarah, Daniel’s incredibly timid, overworked executive assistant.
Sarah was physically trembling, tightly clutching a small manila folder to her chest.
"Sarah? What are you doing here?" Rachel asked, keeping a safe distance.
"I saw your incredible livestream, Rachel, and I just couldn't keep this horrible secret anymore," Sarah cried softly.
Sarah explained that Daniel’s talent agency had been secretly bankrupt for over two years.
He owed millions of dollars to very dangerous, highly illegal loan sharks, and his wealthy father had entirely cut him off.
"The rental house you two lived in was heavily insured for three million dollars," Sarah revealed, her voice shaking violently.
"But Daniel didn't just want the property insurance money, Rachel."
Sarah took a terrifying step forward, holding out the small folder.
"He secretly took out a massive five-million-dollar life insurance policy on you just two weeks before the fire."
Rachel felt the cold wind violently knock the remaining breath out of her lungs.
Daniel hadn't just accidentally left her inside the burning house; he had actively intended for her to die in those flames.
"I managed to steal this encrypted USB drive from his private safe," Sarah said, shoving it into Rachel's hands.
"It has all the financial documents and the real truth about that terrible night."
Before Rachel could even properly thank the brave assistant, the deafening roar of a massive engine echoed up the concrete ramp.
A massive, entirely black SUV completely lacking license plates sped aggressively onto the top floor.

The heavy vehicle accelerated violently, steering directly toward the two defenseless women.
"Run!" Rachel screamed at the top of her lungs.
