Chapter 4 - The Hush Money

Rachel froze, staring at her intimidating father-in-law.

"Sit down, Rachel," Arthur commanded in a low, dangerous voice that offered no room for argument.

She slowly slid into the opposite side of the booth, keeping her purse firmly on her lap.

"Where is Detective Miller?" she asked, refusing to let her voice shake.

"Mr. Miller is currently enjoying a very sudden, fully-funded early retirement in Florida," Arthur said with a cruel smirk.

Rachel looked down at the thick manila envelope resting between them.

"What is that?" she demanded.

"That is two million dollars in untraceable cashier's checks, along with expedited divorce papers," Arthur explained calmly.

He leaned forward, his cold blue eyes locking onto her scarred face without a single ounce of pity.

"You sign the papers, you take the money, and you completely forget about Daniel, Chloe, and that unfortunate little fire."

Rachel felt a sudden, fiery surge of absolute rage entirely replace her lingering grief.

"You honestly think you can just pay me to disappear after your son left me to burn alive?" she hissed.

"My son is a very foolish boy who made a terrible, sloppy mistake," Arthur replied, entirely unfazed.

"But the Sterling family absolutely does not do public scandals, and we certainly do not do prison time."

Arthur tapped his expensive gold watch impatiently.

"Take the generous deal, Rachel, because if you decide to play detective, you will lose significantly more than just your pretty face."

Rachel stood up abruptly, leaving the envelope of millions sitting untouched on the table.

"Tell your cowardly son that I will see him in court," she said fiercely.

She turned and walked proudly out of the diner, ignoring Arthur’s dark, threatening glare.

When she drove back to her parents' house, she felt a strange, new sense of empowering clarity.

She finally walked through the front door, fully prepared to tell her father everything about the terrifying meeting.

Instead, she found her father sitting on the living room sofa, holding his head in his hands.

Her mother was pacing the floor, crying softly into a tissue.

"Dad, what happened?" Rachel asked, rushing to his side.

Her father looked up, his face visibly aged by ten years in just a few hours.

"The bank just called," he whispered brokenly.

"They are suddenly foreclosing on my hardware store, and the landlord is evicting us from this house by the end of the week."

Rachel realized with absolute horror that Arthur Sterling’s threat had not been a bluff.
