Chapter 6 - The Rat in the Trap

Late Tuesday night, the security cameras at my front gate chimed. It was Mark. He was alone, soaking wet from the coastal rain, looking pathetic. Against my better judgment, I let him onto the porch—keeping the heavy iron security door locked between us.
“Sarah, please,” he begged, pressing his hands against the cold metal. “My dad is out of control. He made me do it. He said if we didn’t sell the house, we’d go to jail. I never wanted to divorce you!”
I pulled out my phone and quietly hit the voice memo record button. “You tried to leave me homeless, Mark. You stood there with divorce papers.”
“That was his idea! He hired the fake buyers! He forged the county clerk documents!” Mark sobbed, utterly breaking down. “I’ll testify against him, Sarah. I’ll give you everything. Just call off Sterling. Please, don't let them send me to prison.”

“I’ll think about it,” I said coldly, and shut the solid wood door in his face. I hit 'stop' on the recording and forwarded the audio file directly to my lawyer.
