Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

Walking into the villa alone that evening felt surreal. For twenty-two years, this house had felt like a cage governed by Mark’s moods and Richard’s overbearing demands. Tonight, it was a fortress.
The next morning, I sat in Mr. Sterling’s downtown office to review the full extent of the $10 million trust. But Arthur hadn't just left me money; he had left me a roadmap of my husband’s failures.
“Why did they need the house sale so desperately?” I asked, sipping the black coffee Sterling’s assistant had provided.
Sterling slid a heavily redacted financial dossier across the mahogany desk. “Richard’s investment firm is underwater. They are facing an SEC investigation for misappropriation of client funds. Mark co-signed on several illegal bridge loans. They needed the $4 million from your home’s illicit sale to cover their margins by Friday. Without it, they are facing federal prison.”
My stomach churned, not with pity, but with a terrifying realization of how close I had come to ruin. They hadn't just wanted a divorce; they had planned to use my inheritance to save their own skin, leaving me with nothing.

“What’s our next move?” I asked, feeling a fierce, unfamiliar fire igniting in my chest.
“We freeze every joint account,” Sterling replied, a predatory smile playing on his lips. “And we let them suffocate.”
