Chapter 5 - The Country Club Ambush

The annual Carmel Bay Charity Gala was the social event of the season. For two decades, I had attended as Mark’s quiet, agreeable plus-one. This year, I walked in alone, wearing a stunning emerald-green gown purchased with my new, very exclusive black card.

The whispers started the moment I stepped into the ballroom. I saw Richard and Mark near the champagne tower, actively playing the victims to a group of wealthy investors.

I didn't hide. I walked straight up to their circle.

“Sarah,” Richard sneered, loud enough for the crowd to hear. “I’m surprised you showed your face after what you did to this family.”

I smiled sweetly, taking a flute of champagne from a passing waiter. “I’m just here to support the charity, Richard. Though, speaking of charity, I hear the SEC is looking closely at your latest filings. I hope you aren't using these good people's investments to pay off Mark's bridge loans.”

The color drained from the investors' faces. One of them, a prominent tech CEO, frowned at Richard. “What is she talking about, Dick?”

“She’s crazy,” Mark interjected, sweating profusely.

“Am I?” I took a delicate sip of my drink. “Check your offshore accounts, gentlemen. I’d hate for you to lose your money.” I turned on my heel and walked away, leaving their social and professional reputation in absolute ruins.
