Chapter 1 - The Covenant

The silence on the porch was deafening. The ocean breeze rolling in from the Carmel coastline felt suddenly freezing, but I had never felt warmer.

“What do you mean, an ironclad covenant?” Richard’s voice trembled, the arrogant sneer completely wiped from his face.

Mr. Sterling, the older attorney, didn't even blink. He opened a leather-bound document. “Arthur foresaw that his son-in-law might attempt to liquidate this asset. Three years ago, he restructured the deed. This property cannot be sold, transferred, or leveraged without Sarah’s physical signature in the presence of a federal judge. Any attempt to do so constitutes criminal fraud.”

Mark backed away from the steps, looking at his father with wide, panicked eyes. “Dad… you said the title was clear. You said your guy at the county clerk’s office pushed it through!”

“Shut up, Mark,” Richard hissed through his teeth.

Mr. Sterling turned his steely gaze to the younger attorney. “Furthermore, since Mark initiated a fraudulent sale, the trust dictates an immediate forfeiture of his residency rights. Gentlemen, you have exactly ten minutes to vacate my client’s property before I call the sheriff for trespassing.”

I watched the men who had planned to leave me homeless scramble. The "buyers"—who I now realized were likely shell company representatives working for Richard—quickly got back into their sedan and sped off. Mark tried to walk toward me, his hands raised in a pathetic gesture of surrender.

“Sarah, honey, let’s just talk about this inside—”

“The movers packed your things, remember?” I interrupted, my voice steady and cold. “Everything is in storage. Make this easy, Mark. Leave.”
