Chapter 9 - The Race for Life

I dropped perfectly to my knees beside Claire, completely ignoring the chaotic arrests happening all around us.
I desperately pressed two fingers against her pale neck, praying to feel even the faintest pulse.
There was absolutely nothing there.
Her heart had completely stopped from the overwhelming trauma and the heavy sedatives in her system.
My previous training as an emergency medic automatically took over my completely panicked mind.
I interlocked my hands and began performing aggressive chest compressions on my unresponsive wife.
"Stay with me, Claire, you cannot leave us now!" I screamed into the freezing, relentless rain.
Federal agents quickly secured the entire perimeter, snapping heavy handcuffs onto Evelyn and the injured Nathan.
The corrupt Police Chief lay motionless on the ground after losing the brief firefight with the FBI.
I continued to push heavily on Claire's chest, tears completely mixing with the rain on my face.
A real, legitimate ambulance finally breached the factory gates with its sirens wailing loudly.
Real paramedics rushed out with a portable defibrillator and a heavily stocked trauma bag.
They quickly shoved me aside and placed the electronic paddles directly onto Claire's chest.
"Clear!" the lead paramedic shouted before delivering a massive shock to her fragile body.
Her body jolted violently on the wet pavement, but the portable heart monitor still showed a flat line.
"Charge it again, we are losing both her and the baby," the second paramedic yelled frantically.
They delivered another heavy shock, and this time, a weak, erratic beep finally registered on the machine.
They rapidly loaded her onto a stretcher and rushed her into the back of the waiting ambulance.
I climbed in perfectly behind her, holding her cold, lifeless hand as we sped toward the hospital.
The ride felt like an absolute eternity of terrifying beeps and frantic medical procedures.
When we arrived, a massive team of trauma surgeons immediately wheeled her directly into the emergency operating room.
I was forced to wait alone in the sterile, brightly lit hallway for hours, covered in mud and blood.

The heavy surgical doors finally swung open, and the lead doctor walked slowly toward me.
His surgical mask was pulled down, and his face held a completely unreadable, grim expression.
