Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

I held my breath, terrified that my entire world was about to permanently end.
The exhausted surgeon finally offered a small, genuinely warm smile.
"It was an incredibly close call, but your wife and your new baby boy are completely healthy," he announced.
I collapsed into a nearby chair, crying tears of profound, absolute relief and overwhelming joy.
I was finally allowed into the recovery room, where Claire was holding our beautiful, perfectly healthy son.
We kissed deeply, knowing that the horrific nightmare that almost destroyed us was finally over.
Six peaceful months quickly passed as we slowly rebuilt our completely shattered lives.
Evelyn, Nathan, and Marcus were officially sentenced to life in a federal maximum-security prison.
My father spent months in a rehabilitation center and was finally returning to a normal, happy life.
The massive criminal adoption ring was completely dismantled, saving hundreds of innocent families from destruction.
Claire and I moved into a beautiful new house in a quiet, highly secure suburban neighborhood.
We were entirely focused on providing a perfect, safe, and loving environment for our son, Leo.
I was sitting in our comfortable living room, watching Claire gently rock Leo to sleep in his nursery.
I walked to the front door to check the afternoon mail sitting in our secure lockbox.
Most of the letters were simple bills, but one envelope stood out completely from the rest.
It was a perfectly plain, unmarked black envelope with absolutely no return address printed on it.
I carefully tore the heavy paper open and pulled out a single, glossy photograph.
It was a clear, high-resolution picture of little Leo sleeping peacefully in his crib, taken from inside our very own house.

Attached to the back of the terrifying photo was a handwritten note in dark red ink.
"You look exactly like your real father, and I am finally coming to take my son back."
