Chapter 7 - The Impossible Choice

My father looked at me with tears streaming down his bruised and battered face.

Evelyn had kept him locked away in a secret cell for five agonizing years just to control his corporate assets.

"Give me the journal right now, and I will let your precious father go," Evelyn commanded through the megaphone.

I looked at Claire, who was actively leaning against my shoulder and breathing heavily through another contraction.

I had the incredibly important journal tucked safely inside my jacket pocket.

It contained all the irrefutable evidence needed to destroy Evelyn's massive criminal empire forever.

"If you give her that book, she will just kill us all anyway," my father yelled weakly before Nathan hit him.

I knew my father was absolutely right about Evelyn's ruthless, unforgiving nature.

But I also knew I could not stand here and watch my own brother murder my father in cold blood.

"I will give you the journal, just let him walk away," I shouted back into the pouring rain.

I slowly pulled the leather book from my jacket and held it high in the air for them to see.

Evelyn smiled wickedly and ordered Nathan to walk forward and collect the evidence.

Nathan approached me cautiously, keeping his weapon perfectly trained on my chest the entire time.

I tossed the heavy journal onto the wet pavement directly at his expensive leather boots.

Nathan picked it up, verifying the contents before nodding affirmatively to our mother.

Evelyn lowered the heavy megaphone and offered a terrifyingly cold, heartless laugh.

"You really are just as naive as your pathetic father," Evelyn mocked loudly over the storm.

She turned to the dark shadows surrounding the loading dock and casually raised her hand.

The Chief of Police stepped out of the darkness, holding a highly advanced tactical assault rifle.

I realized with absolute horror that the corruption went all the way to the top of the city's justice system.

"Kill all three of them and make it look like a tragic family murder-suicide," Evelyn ordered the Chief.

The corrupt police officer raised his heavy rifle and aimed directly at Claire's pregnant stomach.

Nathan suddenly smiled and pointed his own pistol directly at my father's head.
