Chapter 4 - The Underground Clinic

A thick cloud of highly flammable gas began pouring into the locked stairwell through the ventilation vents.

Marcus coughed violently and desperately pounded his fists against the impenetrable steel door.

I knew we only had a few seconds before a single spark would ignite the entire shaft.

"We have to go all the way down to the bottom," I shouted over the hissing gas.

We sprinted recklessly down the dark concrete stairs, practically falling over our own feet.

At the very bottom of the shaft was another heavy security door with a manual override lever.

I grabbed the rusted metal lever and pulled it downward with absolutely all of my strength.

The heavy gears groaned loudly before the door finally cracked open just enough for us to squeeze through.

We dove onto the floor of the next room right as a massive explosion ripped through the stairwell above us.

The concussive force pushed us forward, but the heavy door slammed shut and shielded us from the deadly flames.

I gasped for fresh air as I slowly stood up and surveyed our new surroundings.

We were standing in a pristine, brightly lit underground medical facility.

The walls were lined with advanced surgical equipment and sterile stainless steel cabinets.

At the very center of the room, Claire was strapped securely to an operating table.

A man in a white surgical coat was standing over her, preparing a large syringe filled with clear liquid.

I did not hesitate for a single fraction of a second.

I charged forward and swung the heavy tire iron directly into the doctor's ribs.

The doctor grunted in sudden agony and collapsed heavily onto the sterile tile floor.

The syringe shattered into dozens of sharp pieces, spilling the unknown drug everywhere.

I rushed to Claire's side and began frantically unbuckling the thick leather restraints on her wrists.

She slowly opened her eyes, blinking rapidly against the harsh fluorescent lights of the clinic.

"Claire, I am here, you are perfectly safe now," I whispered gently.

She looked up at my face, but her eyes were filled with absolute, unadulterated terror.

She began screaming hysterically and violently thrashing against the remaining restraints.

"Get away from me, you twisted monster!" my wife shrieked at the top of her lungs.

She looked at me with pure hatred, completely failing to recognize her own husband.

I backed away in shock, entirely confused by her violent reaction to my rescue.

Then I noticed the empty intravenous fluid bag hanging perfectly above her head.

The label on the bag indicated a powerful hallucinogenic drug used for aggressive psychological conditioning.
