Chapter 6 - The High-Speed Chase

My blood ran completely cold at the terrifying, unbelievable news coming through the phone.

Mark was actively shooting at the police while my mother and sister were trapped inside the stolen car.

They had completely crossed the line from petty thieves to violent, incredibly dangerous criminals.

I put the phone on speaker so Maya could hear the unbelievable update from the frantic detective.

"Is anyone hurt?" I asked, my voice trembling with a violent mixture of intense fear and pure rage.

The detective assured me that the officers were uninjured, but the situation was incredibly volatile and escalating quickly.

Mark was driving erratically at over one hundred miles per hour through incredibly heavy holiday traffic.

I felt absolutely no sympathy for the ruthless monsters who had tortured my innocent wife.

I only cared that their reckless, selfish actions were directly endangering innocent drivers on the busy highway.

"They are refusing to pull over, and we are preparing to deploy heavy spike strips," the detective informed me.

I listened in agonizing, suffocating silence as the intense police radio chatter echoed through the phone.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic crash resonated violently through the distorted audio feed.

The detective cursed loudly as the deafening sound of screeching tires filled the background.

"The vehicle just lost control and rolled over multiple times into the concrete median," the detective shouted.

My heart pounded heavily in my chest as I waited for the final, gruesome outcome of the violent crash.

Maya grabbed my hand, squeezing it so tightly her knuckles turned white as we listened to the chaotic aftermath.

"We have multiple armed officers approaching the overturned vehicle right now," the detective reported breathlessly.

Several incredibly tense minutes passed before the detective finally returned to the open phone line.

"Mr. Evans, we have successfully apprehended your mother, your sister, and Mark."

He paused to catch his breath before dropping a massive, completely unexpected bombshell.

"But we just found something completely inexplicable hidden deep inside the trunk of the car."

The detective's voice grew incredibly serious and dark.

"They were attempting to smuggle two million dollars in counterfeit currency across state lines."
