Chapter 2 - The Stolen Identity

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.

Mark had not just stolen my emergency cash and callously abandoned my suffering family.

He had actively stolen my vulnerable wife's identity to illegally fund his lavish, secret vacation in Miami.

I immediately logged into Maya's secure banking application using the passwords we shared for emergencies.

A brand new, high-limit platinum credit card had been activated just three days ago without our knowledge.

The current balance was already sitting at over twenty thousand dollars in luxury hotel and expensive nightclub charges.

They had aggressively forged her signature while she was physically unable to get out of her bed.

A doctor wearing blood-stained green surgical scrubs suddenly walked through the heavy waiting room doors.

He looked completely exhausted, and his face was entirely devoid of any comforting or good news.

He told me that Maya's surgical incision had become deeply infected due to severe malnutrition and an absolute lack of medication.

The doctor stated clearly that if I had come home just twelve hours later, Maya would have definitely died.

A single tear rolled down my cheek as the crushing, suffocating weight of my family's betrayal hit me.

I thanked the doctor profusely and immediately dialed the emergency line for the New York Police Department.

I informed the dispatcher that I had concrete video evidence of grand larceny, identity theft, and severe child endangerment.

While I was speaking to the police, my phone began buzzing aggressively with incoming calls from a restricted number.

I answered the call and remained completely silent, waiting to see exactly who was on the other end.

My mother began screaming hysterically into the receiver with a voice full of pure, pathetic desperation.

"David, you need to turn your credit cards back on right now because the hotel manager is threatening to arrest us."

I took a deep breath and prepared to deliver the harsh, unforgiving reality to the woman who birthed me.

Before I could speak, a strange man's voice echoed loudly through her side of the phone call.

"Mrs. Evans, we just found a massive bag of illegal narcotics hidden perfectly inside your daughter's luggage."
