Chapter 8 - The Narrow Escape

"Get on the ground! Show me your hands!" the lead SWAT officer roared, sweeping the room with his rifle.
Marcus tried to crawl toward his dropped weapon, but an officer immediately pinned him to the floor with a heavy combat boot.
Wendy burst into hysterical tears, immediately dropping to her knees and throwing her hands in the air.
"Thank God you're here! He has a gun, my husband has gone crazy!" Wendy sobbed, pointing a shaking finger up the stairs at me.
"He's trying to kill my mother-in-law, I've been trying to protect her all night!"
The officers hesitated, their weapons shifting slightly upward in my direction.
Wendy was an exceptional actress, and her tears looked incredibly convincing to strangers.
"Keep your hands where I can see them and slowly walk down the stairs," the officer commanded me.
I complied immediately, holding my hands high and moving down the steps with slow, deliberate movements.
"He forced me to sign documents! He's stealing her money!" Wendy continued to wail, playing the ultimate victim.
"Check the safe in his office, you'll see all the fake papers he made!"
She was trying to use the forged documents to frame me before I could explain they were her doing.
An officer grabbed my arms, forcefully turning me around to secure handcuffs around my wrists.
I didn't resist, letting the cold steel lock into place.
"Check the inside breast pocket of my jacket," I told the officer calmly.
The officer patted me down and retrieved a small, silver digital audio recorder.
"What is that?" Wendy asked, her fake crying hitching for a fraction of a second.
"Before I went to work tonight, I gave Mom a backup recorder just in case she got frightened," I explained.
"I told her to press the big red button if anyone came into her room."
I nodded to the officer holding the device.
"Press play."
The officer clicked the playback button, and the crisp, clear audio of the master bedroom echoed in the quiet foyer.
It wasn't a recording from Mom's room; it was a recording from the camera I had hidden in Wendy's office.
Wendy's voice played loud and clear: "Are you sure this won't show up in the toxicology report?"
Then Marcus's voice responded: "It will simulate a massive cardiac arrest... no coroner will look twice."
The color completely drained from Wendy's face, her mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish.
The officers tightened their grip on both Wendy and Marcus, immediately realizing who the real threats were.

Wendy suddenly snapped, letting out a feral, desperate scream.
She shoved the officer nearest to her and sprinted blindly toward the kitchen.
