Chapter 3 - The Digital Trail

I watched the screen in absolute horror as Marcus pulled a small glass vial from his jacket pocket.

"Are you sure this won't show up in the toxicology report?" Wendy asked, eyeing the vial.

"I'm a licensed physician, Wendy, I know exactly what I'm doing," Marcus sneered.

"It will simulate a massive cardiac arrest, and given her age and recent 'declining health,' no coroner will look twice."

I didn't have time to call the police, because without hard evidence of the poison, Wendy could easily play the victim.

I needed to dismantle them both tonight.

I opened my laptop and hacked into my own home network router.

Using Marcus's connected phone signal, I quickly traced his digital footprint across the local cell towers.

He was a disgraced private concierge doctor, heavily in debt to several underground gambling syndicates.

Wendy had found the perfect desperate accomplice.

I accessed their shared bank records using a backdoor entry I normally reserved for federal investigations.

Wendy had been systematically draining our joint savings for the past eight months.

She had funneled nearly four hundred thousand dollars into a Cayman Islands shell company.

But what caught my eye was a pending wire transfer scheduled for tomorrow morning.

She was attempting to liquidate my retirement fund and move it offshore.

I rapidly typed out a series of commands, blocking the transfer and flagging her offshore account for international money laundering.

Then, I turned my attention back to the live camera feed on my tablet.

Marcus was pouring the clear liquid from the vial into a glass of apple juice.

"Take this up to her," Marcus instructed, handing the glass to my wife.

Wendy smiled, taking the glass and heading toward the stairs.

I threw my car into drive and sped toward my house, praying I wouldn't be too late.

I burst through the front door just as Wendy reached the top of the staircase.

She froze, nearly dropping the glass of juice on the carpet.

"Luca? What are you doing here?" she gasped, her face turning pale.

"I forgot my security badge," I lied smoothly, walking up the stairs toward her.

"Is that for Mom? Let me take it to her."

May you like

I reached out and firmly grabbed the glass from her trembling hand.

"No!" Wendy shouted, her voice shrill with sudden panic.
