Chapter 2 - The Silent Partner

I stared at my forged signature for a long time, letting the reality of the situation wash over me.

Wendy wasn't just abusing my mother; she was actively framing me for financial fraud.

I carefully photographed every single document with my encrypted work phone.

Then I placed everything back into the safe, locked it, and restored the bookshelf to its exact original state.

When I walked back downstairs, Wendy didn't even bother to look up from her reality show.

"Is the drama queen finally asleep?" she asked, taking another long sip of her wine.

"She is," I replied, forcing my voice to remain steady and calm.

"I actually need to head into the city office for an emergency audit tonight, so I won't be back until tomorrow afternoon."

Wendy finally turned her head, a glimmer of genuine relief flashing across her eyes.

"Oh, what a shame, but work is work, honey."

"Don't worry about us, I'll take great care of her," she added with a sickeningly sweet smile.

I grabbed my briefcase, kissed her on the cheek, and walked out into the cold night.

But I didn't drive to the city.

Instead, I parked my car three blocks away, hidden in the shadows of an abandoned lot.

Before I left the house, I had quietly activated the hidden nanny cameras I originally installed to monitor our dog years ago.

I pulled out my tablet and tapped into the live feed of our living room.

For the first twenty minutes, Wendy just sat on the couch, finishing her bottle of wine.

Then, she picked up her phone and made a brief, hushed call.

Ten minutes later, the front door opened, and a tall man in a grey suit walked in.

It was the man from Mom's description, the one with the cold smile.

Wendy leaped off the couch, threw her arms around his neck, and kissed him passionately.

"He's gone," Wendy laughed, running her hands through the man's hair.

"Good," the man replied, his voice deep and smooth.

"Because the final dosage needs to be administered tonight if we want her heart to stop looking like natural causes."

I gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned completely white.

They weren't just stealing her money; they were planning a murder.
