Chapter 10 - The Final Audit

Six months later, the morning sun poured warmly through the kitchen windows, highlighting the fresh coat of yellow paint.
I stood at the stove, flipping pancakes while humming quietly to a song playing on the radio.
The brass latch on the outside of the pantry door was long gone, the wood sanded and repaired until it looked brand new.
Mom walked into the kitchen, using her cane more out of habit than actual necessity.
She had gained twenty pounds, the dark circles under her eyes had vanished, and her bright, warm smile had fully returned.
"Good morning, sweetheart," she chimed, sitting down at the kitchen island and pouring herself a cup of coffee.
"Morning, Mom. Pancakes are almost ready," I replied, sliding a massive stack onto a warm plate.
Wendy had been sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison for conspiracy to commit murder and financial fraud.
Marcus got twenty years, thanks to his extensive rap sheet and the illegal firearms charge.
I had successfully recovered every single dollar Wendy had tried to steal, securing Mom's future and my own peace of mind.
We spent our weekends gardening, watching classic movies, and slowly rebuilding the trust and love that Wendy had tried to destroy.
It was a quiet, peaceful life, and it was exactly what we both deserved.
Later that afternoon, I went up to the dusty attic to organize some old boxes I hadn't touched since my father passed away.
I was sorting through old tax documents when I noticed a small, heavy steel lockbox pushed far into the corner behind some winter coats.
I wiped the thick layer of dust off the top and used an old hairpin to pick the rusted lock.
Inside, resting on top of my father's old military medals, was a fresh, crisp envelope with Wendy's elegant handwriting on it.
The letter was dated just one week before I came home early and discovered the abuse in the kitchen.

I unfolded the paper, my blood instantly turning to ice as I read the first sentence.
"The old woman is almost out of the way, just like we planned, but Luca is getting suspicious... what do I do now, Dad?"
