Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Empire

The blinding lights of federal tactical rifles filled the cold, sterile room. An FBI commander stepped forward, demanding that everyone drop their weapons immediately. I slowly lowered my pistol and placed it carefully onto the floor. I shouted that my wife was pregnant and in extreme medical distress. Federal medics instantly rushed past me, pushing my mother aside to attend to Elena. The commander approached my mother, reading her Miranda rights as agents placed her in heavy steel handcuffs. My mother screamed hysterically, demanding to call her high-priced lawyers and threatening to sue the entire agency. The commander coldly informed her that the syndicate's master ledger had been anonymously emailed to the FBI thirty minutes ago. Silas had uploaded a copy of the files from Lucas’s email before we left the safehouse. The entire corporate network, the shell companies, and the illegal weapons trades were completely exposed. Lucas sobbed on the floor, bleeding from his shoulder as agents roughly secured his wrists. He begged me to forgive him, pleading for a character reference in federal court. I looked at the brother I had loved my entire life and felt absolutely nothing but disgust. I turned my back on him and rushed to Elena's side as the medics loaded her onto a stretcher. The dangerous labor-inducing drugs were aggressively fighting against the stabilizing agents the medics administered. I held her trembling hand as they rushed her out to an armored ambulance waiting in the loading dock. I climbed into the back with her, praying desperately that our unborn son would survive the trauma. The ambulance sped through the city streets with a heavy police escort. My phone buzzed with an incoming message from Silas. He informed me that the board of directors had held an emergency meeting after the FBI raid. They had unanimously voted to reinstate my executive powers and cancel the fraudulent merger. I had finally won the war, but the battle for my family’s survival was just beginning in the hospital. Elena squeezed my hand with a sudden, bone-crushing grip. She looked at me with wide, terrified eyes and screamed that the baby was coming right now.
