Chapter 3 - The Hidden Poison

Two massive security guards grabbed my arms before I could even step further into the room. My mother stood up and smoothed the wrinkles from her designer skirt. She told me that fighting her was a completely useless endeavor. She claimed she was simply protecting my father's legacy from a gold-digging wife and an ungrateful son. I spat at her feet, telling her she was an absolute monster. Marcus instructed the guards to throw me out of the building and ban me from the premises. I was shoved onto the cold pavement of the street, completely cut off from my own empire. I walked back to my car, my mind racing with absolute fury. I realized I could not fight a rigged legal battle through conventional corporate means. I remembered a rogue forensic accountant named Silas who had been fired by my mother a year ago. Silas hated my family, which made him the perfect person to help me tear it down. I drove to a shady part of town and found Silas in his cluttered basement office. I offered him ten percent of whatever we could recover if he helped me expose the shell companies. Silas grinned and immediately hacked into the Northbridge Interiors server using a backdoor he had left behind. Within minutes, he uncovered the massive money trail leading straight to my mother’s private offshore trust. My phone suddenly rang, interrupting our massive breakthrough. It was Elena, sobbing in absolute agony. She told me that her stomach was cramping violently and she was bleeding. I abandoned Silas and drove like a maniac back to the downtown hotel. I found Elena collapsed on the bathroom floor, clutching her pregnant belly in sheer terror. I carried her to the car and broke every speed limit to reach the nearest hospital. The emergency room doctors rushed her into the trauma ward while I paced the waiting room in panic. An hour later, the lead physician walked out with a very grim expression on his face. He asked me if Elena had been taking any unauthorized medications during her pregnancy. I frantically shook my head and demanded to know what was wrong with my wife. The doctor revealed that Elena’s blood work showed dangerous levels of a labor-inducing chemical. He said the chemical was commonly found in a rare, unregulated herbal tea. My blood ran completely cold. My mother had forced Elena to drink a special herbal tea every single morning to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
