Chapter 1 - The Departure

I gripped the leather handles of our suitcases and guided Elena toward the heavy oak doors. The marble foyer felt colder than ice as we walked away from my mother’s cruel laughter. Lucas was still holding his phone, capturing every second of our retreat for his sick amusement. He thought he had won. They both believed that pushing my wife to her breaking point would finally break my spirit. They were completely wrong. I helped Elena into the passenger seat of my car and secured her seatbelt. Her hands were still shaking, and her eyes carried a deep, haunting fear. I kissed her forehead and promised her that she would never have to see them again. I started the engine and drove out of the estate gates without looking in the rearview mirror. My immediate priority was getting my pregnant wife to a safe and comfortable environment. I pulled up to a luxury downtown hotel and booked their best security suite. Once Elena was resting in the massive bed, I opened my laptop to transfer funds. I needed to secure the remaining household reserves before my mother realized what I knew. I logged into the primary family banking portal. My password was rejected. I tried my secondary access credentials, but the screen flashed a bright red warning. An automated message stated that my executive privileges had been permanently revoked by the board of directors. I reached for my phone to call my private wealth manager. Before I could dial, an email notification popped up on my screen. It was a legal notice from the family company's legal department. The document accused me of embezzling exactly $684,000 from the corporate accounts. Attached was a digitally forged confession letter bearing my exact signature. Lucas had not just stolen the money for himself. He had expertly framed me to take the fall and face federal prison.
