Chapter 5 - The Hunter Becomes Hunted

The dial tone hummed in my ear, echoing the terrifying reality of my new situation. My mother had not just sold the company to aggressive corporate raiders. She had sold our entire family legacy to a violent international crime syndicate. I smashed the burner phone against the brick wall of Silas's basement. Silas looked at me in sheer panic and immediately began packing his computers into a duffel bag. He told me he was leaving the country tonight and advised me to do exactly the same. I could not run. I had a wife and an unborn son waiting in a highly vulnerable hospital room. I drove back to the medical center, my eyes scanning every passing vehicle for potential threats. I rushed into the maternity ward and demanded an immediate, discrete discharge for Elena. The nurses protested, but I paid a private ambulance service to transport her entirely under the radar. I moved her to a highly secure, unlisted safehouse located deep in the mountains outside the city. Elena lay on the couch, wrapped in heavy blankets, completely exhausted by the endless terror. I locked every door, pulled the blackout curtains, and loaded a registered firearm I kept for emergencies. I had to find a way to leak the syndicate's involvement to the federal authorities without getting us killed. I opened my laptop and connected to a secure VPN network to contact the FBI. Before I could type a single word, the power in the safehouse was suddenly cut. The entire cabin plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness. Elena gasped, reaching out into the blackness to frantically find my hand. I told her to stay completely silent and get behind the heavy oak bookshelf. I raised my weapon and crept slowly toward the front hallway. I heard the crunch of heavy boots stepping onto the wooden porch outside. Someone forcefully kicked the front door, splintering the wooden frame into pieces. I aimed my gun at the doorway as a shadowy figure stepped into the pale moonlight. It was my brother, Lucas. He held his hands up in the air, his face completely covered in fresh blood and dark bruises. He begged me not to shoot, screaming that our mother had betrayed him too.
