Chapter 8 - The Hidden Camera

I screamed and violently kicked the metal cage separating me from the police officers.

I begged them to drive me to the hospital, sobbing as I realized I might lose my wife and my son tonight.

The officers ignored my desperate pleas and drove me straight to the county jail.

They threw me into a damp holding cell and allowed me exactly one phone call.

I dialed Marcus with trembling hands, praying he could find a way to get me out on bail.

“I cannot get you out until the judge reviews the domestic violence charges tomorrow morning,” Marcus explained grimly.

“Unless we can instantly prove your mother faked those injuries, you are stuck in that cell.”

I paced the tiny concrete room, my mind racing through every single detail of my apartment.

I tried to remember if any of the neighbors had cameras facing our windows.

Suddenly, a brilliant memory struck me like a bolt of lightning.

Two weeks ago, I had secretly installed a small nanny camera hidden inside a teddy bear in the living room.

I had bought it to monitor the baby's crib, but I had left it on the bookshelf to charge.

“Marcus, there is a hidden camera on the bookshelf in the living room!” I shouted into the phone.

“It records audio and video directly to a secure cloud account!”

Marcus typed frantically on his keyboard, searching for the digital server.

“I found the server, Ethan, but it is locked behind a two-factor authentication password.”

“The only person who has the password is Emily.”

My heart dropped completely into my stomach.

Emily was currently unconscious on an operating table, undergoing a life-or-death emergency surgery.

There was absolutely no way to reach her in time to unlock the video evidence.

“I am going to the hospital right now to intercept the surgical team,” Marcus promised.

He hung up the phone, leaving me completely alone in the terrifying silence of the jail cell.

An hour passed, and a gruff prison guard suddenly unlocked the heavy metal door to my cell.

He looked at me with a strange expression and told me to grab my things.

“Your lawyer just sent over a video that made the police chief drop every single charge against you.”
