Chapter 7 - The False Arrest

I sped back to the apartment, praying I would arrive before the situation spiraled completely out of control.
When I pulled into the parking lot, three police cruisers were already parked out front.
Their red and blue lights flashed aggressively against the brick exterior of the building.
I jumped out of my car and ran toward the front door with the folder of evidence clutched in my hand.
Two large police officers were standing in the hallway, blocking the entrance to my home.
I pushed past them and saw my mother sitting on the couch, sobbing hysterically.
Her face was covered in dark, terrible bruises, and her lip was actively bleeding.
Brittany and Kayla were comforting her, pointing accusing fingers in my direction.
“That is him!” Teresa cried out dramatically.
“He came home in a drug-fueled rage and beat me because I asked him to pay the rent!”
I froze in pure shock, unable to comprehend the sheer audacity of her lies.
She had physically beaten her own face to frame me for domestic abuse.
“That is a complete lie!” I shouted, holding up the manila folder.
“She stole my wife's identity to buy a house in Florida, and I have the proof right here!”
The lead police officer snatched the folder out of my hand without even looking at the documents inside.
“Turn around and place your hands behind your back, son,” the officer commanded sternly.
I tried to explain about the poisoned tea, the stolen jewelry, and the fake lease.
The officer did not listen to a single word I said as he aggressively slammed me against the wall.
He locked cold steel handcuffs around my wrists and read me my Miranda rights.
Teresa looked at me over the officer's shoulder, and her sobbing instantly stopped.
She offered me a cruel, victorious smirk that chilled me to the bone.
They dragged me out of the apartment and threw me into the back of a freezing police cruiser.
As the car pulled away, my cell phone rang loudly from the pocket of my confiscated jacket in the front seat.

The officer answered it on speakerphone, and Marcus's frantic voice echoed through the car.
“Ethan, Emily's heart just failed, and they are rushing her into an emergency C-section!”
