Chapter 4 - The Narrow Escape

Mark stood in the doorway, his eyes burning with absolute, murderous rage as he stared down at me.
He looked at the cell phone recording his confession on the carpet, and a wicked smile crossed his face.
He lunged forward with terrifying speed, his heavy hands reaching aggressively for my throat.
I reacted purely on instinct, grabbing a heavy silver serving dome from the food cart.
I swung the metal dome with all my strength, smashing it directly into the side of his head.
Mark stumbled backward with a painful grunt, blood instantly pouring from a deep cut above his eyebrow.
I did not wait for him to recover his balance.
I abandoned my phone on the floor, turned around, and sprinted blindly down the long, carpeted hallway.
Chloe ran out of the suite, screaming obscenities as she tried to throw a heavy glass vase at my head.
The vase shattered violently against the wall right beside me, showering my hair with sharp glass shards.
I pushed through the heavy emergency exit doors and threw myself down the concrete stairwell.
I leaped down the stairs two at a time, terrified that Mark was right behind me in the shadows.
After descending twenty exhausting flights, I burst out of the fire exit and into the chaotic city streets.
The cold rain washed the sweat from my face as I desperately tried to catch my breath in an alleyway.
I realized with absolute horror that I had left the only piece of audio evidence sitting on the hotel floor.
However, I still had Margaret’s authentic leather binder securely tucked securely under my arm.
I decided I could not fight a billionaire murderer entirely on my own.
I ran four blocks in the pouring rain until I reached the downtown police precinct.
I burst through the glass doors, completely soaked, bleeding slightly, and begging for immediate help.
I approached the front desk and frantically explained the murder, the theft, and the assault to the commanding officer.
Detective Miller, a tall man with cold, calculating eyes, listened to my story with a totally blank expression.
He slowly walked around the wooden desk and placed a firm, heavy hand on my trembling shoulder.
I thought he was finally going to offer me the protection and justice I desperately needed.
Instead, Detective Miller smiled cruelly and pulled a heavy pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.
He violently twisted my arms behind my back and locked the cold metal tightly around my wrists.

He leaned in close to my ear, his breath smelling heavily of stale coffee and cheap cigarettes.
I am placing you under arrest, Clara, because your husband already reported you for assaulting him and stealing his mother's priceless jewelry.
