Chapter 2 - The Stolen Empire

I gripped the phone tightly, my knuckles turning completely white as the attorney’s words echoed in my mind.
Mr. Sterling explained that Mark had presented a fraudulent power of attorney document to the bank manager just moments ago.
Because Margaret had kept the true trust a secret, the bank had no immediate reason to suspect foul play.
I hung up the phone and sprinted back to my car, leaving the dusty guest house behind.
The downtown branch of the corporate bank was only fifteen minutes away if I ignored every single speed limit.
I drove recklessly through the slick, rain-soaked streets, gripping the leather steering wheel in pure desperation.
When I finally skidded into the bank’s parking lot, my heart sank into the pit of my stomach.
I watched helplessly through my windshield as Mark casually walked out of the glass double doors.
Chloe was clinging tightly to his arm, laughing brightly as she carried a massive designer handbag.
They climbed into a sleek black sports car and sped away before I could even unbuckle my seatbelt.
I leaped out of my vehicle and ran directly into the grand lobby of the financial institution.
I slammed the heavy leather binder onto the front reception desk, demanding to see the branch manager immediately.
A nervous young teller guided me into a lavish, wood-paneled corner office.
The manager was sitting at his expensive mahogany desk, nervously wiping sweat from his pale forehead.
I opened the binder and shoved the authentic legal documents proving my absolute ownership right in his face.
He looked at Margaret’s true signature, and the blood completely drained from his terrified face.
I demanded to know exactly how much money my treacherous husband had just stolen from the corporate accounts.
The manager stammered uncontrollably, admitting that he had accepted a massive cash bribe to bypass the standard security protocols.
He confessed that Mark had not simply withdrawn physical cash in a duffel bag.
Instead, Mark had executed a massive, irreversible electronic wire transfer of five hundred million dollars.
I screamed in absolute frustration, demanding to know what offshore account the money was sent to.
The manager turned his computer monitor toward me, his hands shaking violently as he pointed to the destination name.
I stared at the screen, my entire world completely shattering for the second time tonight.

The money had not been sent to a random shell company in the Cayman Islands.
It had been wired directly into the personal checking account of my own estranged, ruthlessly abusive father.
