Chapter 6 - The Glass Cage

The heavy steel doors of the private elevator suddenly groaned as the cables snapped in the shaft below.
Alexander grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the master bedroom at the far end of the hallway.
He punched a code into a hidden keypad on the wall, and a massive bookcase slid open to reveal a reinforced panic room.
He pushed me inside with Paige and handed me a loaded pistol from a hidden compartment.
He told me to lock the steel door from the inside and to shoot anyone other than him who tried to enter.
I begged him to stay in the room with us, but he refused, saying he had to manually activate the building’s lockdown protocol.
The heavy door slid shut, plunging me into complete silence, with only a small security monitor connecting me to the outside world.
I watched the grainy video feed as four heavily armed men dressed in black tactical gear breached the penthouse living room.
Alexander fought like a wild animal, taking down two of the intruders with his bare hands before a third struck him with the butt of a rifle.
Alexander collapsed to the marble floor, blood pouring from a deep gash on his forehead.
Greg casually strolled into the view of the camera, wearing a sickeningly triumphant smile.
He crouched down next to Alexander and pulled a small, flashing device from his coat pocket.
Greg held the device up to the security camera, knowing I was watching from the panic room.

It was a remote detonator wired to a block of explosives attached to the panic room's ventilation shaft.
Greg looked directly into the camera and gave me exactly ten seconds to open the door, or he would suffocate us all.
