Chapter 2 - The Security Footage

Greg violently rattled the doorknob, but the thick steel refused to budge.
He spun around, his face turning bright red with rage, and screamed at Alexander to open the door immediately.
Alexander simply ignored him and carefully handed my sleeping baby back into my arms.
The warmth of my daughter against my chest gave me a desperate surge of courage.
I backed into the corner of the office, shielding Paige from the monster I had spent months trying to escape.
Eleanor pointed a trembling finger at Alexander and threatened to destroy his entire restaurant empire by tomorrow morning.
Alexander casually leaned back in his leather chair and typed a command into his computer keyboard.
A massive flat-screen monitor on the wall flickered to life, displaying a grid of high-definition security feeds.
He clicked on the camera labeled "Second Floor Linen Storage" and pressed play.
The black-and-white footage showed my baby sleeping peacefully beneath her pink blanket.
Then, the door opened, and Brenda crept into the room with a guilty look on her face.
We all watched in silence as the manager picked up my daughter, carried her down the stairs, and deliberately left her on the cold basement steps.
Brenda fell to her knees, sobbing and begging for forgiveness.
She confessed that Eleanor had paid her ten thousand dollars to orchestrate the entire disappearance so I would be arrested for child endangerment.
Greg lunged across the room, determined to snatch Paige from my arms before the police could be called.
Before his hands could even touch me, Alexander vaulted over his desk and slammed Greg forcefully against the concrete wall.

Suddenly, the red emergency phone on Alexander’s desk began to ring violently.
Alexander answered it, listening for only a few seconds before his face turned completely pale.
