Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate

Eleanor gloated that her money had bought the federal courts long before Alexander had ever made his desperate phone call.

Greg stepped out of the fog, snatching the evidence bag from my hands and laughing maliciously.

He aimed his gun directly at my chest, promising that Paige would be raised by people who actually mattered.

Alexander looked at me, gave a slow, deliberate nod, and told me to close my eyes tightly.

I squeezed my eyes shut just as the deafening sound of a helicopter roared to life from directly above the warehouse.

A dozen heavily armed FBI tactical agents dropped from the rafters, their laser sights instantly painting Greg and Eleanor’s chests.

Alexander had never trusted the corrupt judge; he had worn a federal wire and broadcasted the entire extortion plot directly to the FBI Director.

Greg panicked and pulled the trigger, but Alexander tackled him to the damp concrete, taking a grazing bullet to his shoulder to protect me.

The agents violently subdued Greg and Eleanor, slapping heavy iron cuffs on their wrists while they screamed in disbelief.

The nightmare was finally over, the corruption was fully exposed, and my daughter was permanently safe from their wickedness.

Months later, the dark memories of that week felt like a distant, fading shadow.

Greg and Eleanor were sentenced to federal prison without the possibility of parole, and I was granted full, uncontested custody of Paige.

Alexander and I had moved into a beautiful, quiet estate in the countryside, building a life together filled with genuine love and peace.

We were sitting on the porch, watching Paige play in the grass, when a certified courier handed me a thick, unmarked envelope.

I opened it to find a single, crystal-clear photograph of Alexander secretly shaking hands with Greg at a coffee shop months before I ever got pregnant.

Attached to the photograph was a handwritten note from my supposedly dead father.

The note simply read, "He was in on it from the very beginning."
