Chapter 1 - The Trap

The silence in the basement office was so heavy it felt hard to breathe.

Alexander Remington did not move a single muscle as he stared at the terrified manager.

Brenda opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

She had just claimed to have called my baby’s father, a man I had spent the last eight months hiding from.

Alexander’s dark eyes narrowed as he gently rocked my sleeping daughter against his chest.

Before Brenda could formulate a lie, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the wooden staircase.

Two figures stepped into the dimly lit office, pushing past the confused security guards.

My breath caught in my throat as I recognized the expensive tailored suit and the cruel smirk.

It was Greg, my abusive ex-boyfriend, and standing directly behind him was his wealthy, domineering mother, Eleanor.

Eleanor looked at my stained waitress uniform with absolute disgust.

She stepped forward and delivered the chilling words that made my blood run cold.

“Now everyone will know what kind of mother you are,” Eleanor sneered.

She turned to Alexander, pulling a thick envelope of cash from her designer handbag.

She demanded that he hand over her granddaughter and promised to compensate him generously for his trouble.

I braced myself, fully expecting the intimidating billionaire to hand Paige over and have me escorted off the property.

Instead, Alexander slowly set the envelope on his desk and let out a dark, mocking laugh.

He looked directly at Eleanor and asked why she thought her money meant anything inside his building.

Eleanor’s arrogant smile faltered for the first time.

Alexander pressed a hidden button beneath his mahogany desk.

The heavy steel door at the top of the stairs slammed shut with a deafening metallic crash, locking us all inside.
