Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Alliance

I stared at Claire, trying to find any trace of a lie in her cold, calculating eyes.
I finally unbuckled my seatbelt and climbed over the center console, allowing her to take the driver's wheel.
Claire slammed the door shut, threw the truck into gear, and sped out of the gas station onto the dark highway.
“Where are we going?” I asked, keeping a protective hand on Maria’s trembling shoulder in the back.
“To a safe house I set up months ago, off the grid and untraceable by Vance’s people,” she replied sharply.
“Why did you hurt Lily in the nursery if you are trying to protect her now?” I demanded, unable to let it go.
Claire gripped the steering wheel tightly, her knuckles turning completely white under the dashboard lights.
“I had to make you hate me, Daniel, I needed you to take her and run far away from me,” she explained, her voice cracking slightly.
“I was supposed to deliver her to Vance tomorrow, but I couldn't go through with it,” she confessed.
“So you staged the abuse to force me to leave, knowing I would take Maria and the baby?” I asked, astonished by the convoluted plan.
“It was the only way to break protocol without Vance suspecting I was turning on him,” she nodded slowly.
We drove in tense, heavy silence for another hour, winding deep into the remote, forested mountains.
Claire finally pulled the truck off the main road, navigating down a hidden dirt path completely obscured by overgrown trees.
At the end of the long path stood a heavily fortified concrete cabin, surrounded by high-tech security cameras.
“We will be safe here for a few days while I arrange new identities for you and Lily,” Claire said, turning off the engine.
We hurried inside the cabin, the heavy steel door sealing tightly shut behind us with a loud, metallic clank.
Maria immediately took Lily to a back room, trying to establish some sense of normalcy for the exhausted child.
I stood in the main room, watching Claire methodically load several large, dangerous-looking weapons on the table.

Suddenly, the power in the cabin completely died, plunging us into absolute, terrifying darkness.
The heavy steel door we had just locked began to hiss, as sparks from a cutting torch pierced through the metal frame.
