Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

I froze in my tracks, the plastic bag of burner phones slipping from my sweaty grip.
Claire did not pull a weapon; instead, she casually leaned against the side of her silver sedan.
“You always were so predictable, Daniel,” she called out, her voice easily carrying across the empty parking lot.
I rushed back to the truck, stepping defensively between her and the passenger door where my family hid.
“Stay away from us, Claire, I swear to God I will kill you,” I threatened, my voice shaking with raw adrenaline.
She laughed, a harsh, emotionless sound that echoed loudly in the quiet night air.
“You don't have it in you, Daniel, you are far too soft for this world,” she mocked, taking a slow step forward.
“I know about Julian Vance,” I yelled, hoping the name would make her hesitate.
Claire stopped walking, her arrogant smile instantly vanishing into a hard, serious frown.
“You went into my lockbox,” she stated, her tone turning dangerously cold and lethal.
“I know you bred my daughter just to be a donor for that monster,” I continued, pointing an accusing finger at her.
“You know absolutely nothing about the bigger picture, Daniel,” she snapped back fiercely.
Before I could respond, the screeching of tires echoed from the main road leading into the station.
The same black SUV from our house swerved into the parking lot, aggressively blocking the exit.
The two armed men from before jumped out, their weapons drawn and pointed directly at us.
“Stand down, Claire, the boss wants the child immediately,” the larger man shouted.
Claire slowly turned her head, looking at the two men with absolute disgust.
“The extraction wasn't supposed to happen until tomorrow,” she argued, stepping away from my truck.
“Plans changed, hand over the baby now, or we kill the husband and take her anyway,” the man ordered.

I reached behind my back, gripping the heavy tire iron I had secretly grabbed from the truck bed.
Claire suddenly pulled a suppressed pistol from her jacket, aiming it directly at my chest.
