Chapter 8 - The Twisted Loyalties

I closed my eyes, bracing myself for the painful impact of the bullet that was surely coming.

Instead of a gunshot, I heard the heavy thud of a body hitting the concrete pavement.

I opened my eyes and saw the larger armed man clutching his bleeding shoulder, dropping his weapon.

Claire had not shot me; she had turned her weapon on the men sent to collect my daughter.

“Get in the truck, Daniel!” Claire screamed, firing another suppressed shot at the second man.

I didn't hesitate for a single second, scrambling into the driver’s seat and slamming the door shut.

I turned the key, throwing the transmission into reverse to back away from the sudden chaotic crossfire.

“What is she doing?” Maria cried out, covering Lily’s ears to protect her from the noise.

“I have no idea, just stay down!” I yelled back, maneuvering the heavy truck around the gas pumps.

Through the windshield, I saw Claire duck behind her silver sedan, exchanging rapid fire with the remaining thug.

She was incredibly fast and precise, moving with the deadly grace of a highly trained soldier.

Within seconds, the second man fell to the ground, completely incapacitated by her precise shots.

Claire quickly reloaded her weapon and ran directly toward the front of my truck.

She aggressively yanked the driver's side door open, her chest heaving heavily from the sudden exertion.

“Move over, we don't have much time before Vance sends more of his people,” she ordered, pointing the gun at my face.

“Why should I trust you?” I demanded, refusing to unbuckle my seatbelt or move an inch.

“Because if you don't let me drive, Julian Vance will have your daughter on a private jet to Europe in an hour,” she hissed.

She lowered the gun, looking at me with an expression I had never seen on her face before.

It looked exactly like genuine, desperate fear.

“He changed the terms, Daniel, he wants to kill her after the marrow extraction,” she whispered softly.
