Chapter 3 - The Hidden File

Mila stared at Luca in absolute disbelief as the streetlights blurred past the armored windows.
She had never committed a crime in her entire life, let alone one that warranted a federal assassination attempt.
Luca drove them deep into the industrial district, finally parking inside an abandoned, underground concrete garage.
He turned off the engine and demanded to know exactly what files she had opened at work today.
Mila shook her head, stating that she only managed his daily calendar and standard legal correspondence.
Luca pulled out his encrypted smartphone and aggressively brought up the company's internal server logs.
He showed her a digital timestamp proving her specific login credentials had accessed a restricted offshore financial folder at three in the afternoon.
Mila felt a sickening drop in her stomach as a vague memory finally surfaced.
She explained that she had received a calendar invite from his second-in-command, Marcus, containing a linked attachment.
She had clicked the attachment to schedule a meeting, but the screen had simply flashed and closed.
Luca cursed loudly in Italian and punched the heavy steering wheel with his bare fist.
He realized that Marcus had used her computer terminal to secretly download the syndicate's master ledger.
Marcus had framed Mila as the federal informant to cover his own treasonous tracks.
Luca looked at her and promised that he would completely destroy Marcus for dragging an innocent woman into this war.
Suddenly, the encrypted smartphone in his hand began to ring with an unknown video call.

Luca answered it, and the smiling face of Marcus appeared on the bright screen.
Marcus cheerfully announced that the explosive charges wired to the bottom of Luca's SUV were currently armed.
