Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Chocolate

I gripped the heavy emergency hammer with both hands and slammed it furiously against the rear window.

The reinforced glass shattered into a million tiny, glittering pieces across the back seat.

Nathaniel laid down relentless covering fire, keeping the remaining mercenaries pinned behind their massive trucks.

I climbed clumsily through the broken window, dragging a terrified and crying Lily out into the freezing rain.

Nathaniel scrambled out right behind us, grabbing my hand and pulling us toward the dense, dark woods bordering the highway.

We ran blindly through the thick pine trees, the sharp branches scratching our faces and tearing our clothes.

The sound of angry shouting and barking search dogs echoed terrifyingly close behind us in the darkness.

After an agonizing hour of running, we stumbled upon the decaying remains of an abandoned roadside motel.

We kicked open the rotting wooden door of a collapsed cabin and huddled silently in the darkest corner.

The freezing rain poured through the broken roof, soaking us completely to the bone.

I held Lily tightly against my chest, desperately trying to warm her shivering, fragile little body.

"We will wait here until sunrise, and then I will contact my private security contractor," Nathaniel whispered reassuringly.

I nodded, but my heart suddenly stopped when I felt the intense, burning heat radiating from Lily's skin.

I touched her forehead, realizing she was running a dangerously high, unnatural fever.

"Mommy, my tummy hurts so bad," Lily whimpered, her tiny voice weak and slurred.

She began to cough violently, spitting up a thick, dark substance that looked terrifyingly like blood.

Nathaniel quickly turned on a small tactical flashlight, shining the dim beam onto her pale face.

He noticed a strange, dark rash spreading rapidly across her small neck and chocolate-stained hands.

"This is not a normal fever, Elena," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute dread.

"Vanessa owns a major pharmaceutical manufacturing plant that specializes in synthetic neurotoxins."

I looked down at the brown stains on my daughter's fingers, the horrific realization hitting me like a physical blow.

"She didn't just touch the chocolate fountain at the gala," I choked out, tears blinding my vision.

"Vanessa deliberately laced the bottom tier of the fountain with a lethal, slow-acting poison."
