Chapter 1 - The Red Folder

Nathaniel did not look at Vanessa.

He did not look at me.

His gaze bypassed us entirely and landed on a thick red folder partially hidden beneath the draped linen of the champagne table.

Vanessa noticed his sudden distraction and her confident posture immediately crumbled.

She took a quick, panicked step to the side in a desperate attempt to block his view.

It was the absolute worst thing she could have possibly done.

Nathaniel stepped around her with the effortless, unyielding authority of a man who owned the very floor she stood on.

He reached down and pulled the heavy red folder from its clumsy hiding place.

The string quartet remained utterly silent as the tension in the room thickened into something suffocating.

Vanessa reached out with a trembling hand to grab the file back from him.

"That is private wedding planning material, Nathaniel," she lied, her voice cracking slightly under the pressure.

He ignored her completely and flipped the thick cover open.

I watched his striking gray eyes scan the first page, and the temperature in the ballroom seemed to drop twenty degrees.

He slowly turned to look at the woman he was supposed to marry in exactly eight days.

"Private wedding planning?" he asked in a dangerously quiet, echoing voice.

"This is a comprehensive private investigation dossier on my housekeeper and her four-year-old daughter."

My heart slammed aggressively against my ribs as a wave of nausea washed over me.

I had absolutely no idea why a billionaire's powerful fiancée would spend her vast resources investigating me.

Nathaniel read aloud from the document for the entire silent room to hear clearly.

"It details a carefully orchestrated plan to plant stolen diamond jewelry in Elena's quarters tonight."

"It also includes a pre-signed, illegal deportation order from your father, the federal judge."

"You intended to have little Lily placed permanently in the state foster system by tomorrow morning."

A collective gasp of sheer horror rippled through the crowded room of wealthy donors and elite socialites.

Vanessa's beautiful face flushed a deep, ugly crimson as her terrible secrets were laid bare.

"She is a massive distraction and a filthy parasite, Nathaniel!" Vanessa screamed, completely losing her refined, aristocratic facade.

"You look at that pathetic maid with more affection and respect than you have ever looked at me."

Nathaniel closed the red folder with a sharp, echoing snap that sounded like a gunshot.

"There will be no wedding next week or ever."

"Pack your belongings tonight and leave my estate immediately."

Vanessa did not cry, nor did she fall to her knees to beg for his forgiveness.

Instead, a terrifying, wicked smile slowly spread across her perfectly painted red lips.

"You honestly think you can just dismiss me like one of your disposable employees?" she whispered venomously.

"I triggered the secondary phase of my contingency plan the exact moment you touched that folder."

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom suddenly burst open with a deafening crash.

Five armed men wearing tactical vests and carrying federal badges marched directly toward me and my terrified daughter.
