Chapter 10 - The Wedding Gift

Before the corrupt agent could even place his finger on the trigger, a sharp voice echoed through the alley.
"Stand down immediately, Agent Miller, or you will be shot where you stand."
The Director of the FBI stepped out of a black sedan, flanked by ten heavily armed internal affairs officers.
The corrupt agent instantly dropped his weapon in sheer panic, realizing his treasonous plot was completely exposed.

Nathaniel stood at the altar, leaning slightly on an elegant silver cane, looking at me with absolute, unconditional love.
We exchanged our vows surrounded by loyal friends, completely free from the dark shadows of the past.
We danced together as a true, unbroken family, knowing that nothing could ever tear us apart again.
Late that evening, after the guests had gone home, I walked into Nathaniel's private study to fetch my coat.
I noticed a strange, unmarked black velvet gift box sitting mysteriously on the center of his mahogany desk.
I carefully opened the lid, finding a torn, faded photograph of my real biological parents smiling happily.

Attached to the eerie photograph was a handwritten note in dark red ink that made my blood run entirely cold.
"Vanessa was only a simple pawn in my game, Elena, and now it is finally my turn to play."
