Chapter 9 - The Final Trap

The fluorescent lights in the underground garage flickered wildly, casting long, terrifying shadows across the concrete pillars.

David instinctively pushed Leo completely behind Maya, shielding them with his own body.

Dozens of armed mercenaries stepped menacingly out from behind parked cars, their weapons drawn and laser sights aimed directly at the family.

Standing arrogantly at the front of the mercenary army was the ruthless leader of the Viper Syndicate.

It was a tall, heavily scarred man named Kael, accompanied closely by a bruised and very angry Sarah.

"The federal agents in this building have been working for me the entire time, Maya," Kael laughed coldly.

"Your entire righteous crusade was nothing but a minor inconvenience to my empire."

Maya gripped her tactical rifle tightly, refusing to show a single ounce of fear to the criminals.

"Toss the flash drive over here, David, and I promise your son will die quickly," Sarah sneered cruelly.

David looked down helplessly at the glowing blue drive safely in his hand.

It was the absolutely only leverage they had left to securely negotiate for their lives.

"If I destroy this drive right now, you lose two billion dollars forever," David threatened, holding it up high in the air.

"You won't do it, because if you break it, my men will unleash a hail of bullets on your precious family," Kael challenged arrogantly.

"He doesn't have to break it," Maya whispered quietly to David without moving her lips at all.

"When I yell 'now', throw it as incredibly hard as you can at the electrical transformer on the ceiling," she instructed perfectly.

David glanced up quickly and saw the massive, high-voltage utility box hanging just twenty feet above Kael's head.

"Time is up, Carter family," Kael declared aggressively, raising his own golden handgun.

"Now!" Maya screamed powerfully at the top of her lungs.

David pitched the flash drive instantly with the speed and accuracy of a professional baseball player.

The heavy plastic drive smashed perfectly into the fragile glass insulators of the high-voltage transformer.

A massive, blinding explosion of blue sparks and pure electricity rained down directly on top of Kael and his armed men.

The mercenaries screamed loudly in pain as the live electrical wires whipped violently across the wet concrete floor.

The entire garage was instantly plunged into absolute darkness, save for the crackling blue lightning.

"Run to the service elevator right now!" Maya yelled, grabbing Leo's hand and pulling him through the fiery chaos.

They sprinted safely past the incapacitated guards, heading straight for the heavy metal doors at the back of the room.

David tackled Sarah aggressively as she tried to blindly fire her weapon into the dark.

He knocked her completely unconscious with a single, incredibly powerful punch to the jaw.

They burst safely into the service elevator and frantically hit the button for the roof access.

"The FBI director is on the roof waiting in a secure chopper, he is the only one we can truly trust," Maya panted heavily.

The elevator doors opened smoothly to the night sky, and a sleek federal helicopter was waiting patiently with its engines running.

They ran quickly toward the chopper, finally seeing the true end of their horrifying nightmare.

But as the pilot turned around to professionally greet them, Maya froze completely in her tracks.

The pilot sitting comfortably in the federal helicopter was Vance.
