Chapter 8 - The Ghost Returns

The armored truck sped quickly through the empty industrial district, leaving the fiery chaos far behind.

David stared in absolute shock at the silver bracelet dangling delicately from the driver's wrist.

It was a custom piece of jewelry he had designed himself ten years ago.

There was only one bracelet exactly like that in the entire world, and it was buried deep in a coffin.

"Maya?" David whispered, his voice trembling with an impossible mix of hope and fear.

The masked driver slowly reached up and unlatched the heavy ballistic helmet.

She pulled the mask off completely, letting a cascade of familiar dark hair fall beautifully over her shoulders.

David gasped loudly as he looked at the face of his first wife, the woman he had mourned for three agonizing years.

"Hello, David," Maya said softly, her bright green eyes filled with deep sorrow and immense love.

"Mommy?" little Leo asked softly from the backseat, leaning forward with wide, disbelieving eyes.

Maya choked back a heavy sob and reached a trembling hand back to gently touch her son's cheek.

"It is really me, my sweet, brave boy," Maya cried, wiping a single tear from her beautiful face.

"I watched your car explode on the bridge, I literally buried you," David stammered, unable to comprehend the miraculous reality.

"I had to fake my death entirely to protect you and Leo from the Syndicate," Maya explained gently.

"I successfully infiltrated their financial network, stole their funds, and went completely underground to dismantle them."

"But why didn't you tell me you were alive?" David asked, feeling a sharp pang of betrayal mixed with his relief.

"Because Sarah was already assigned to watch you closely, and if you knew I was alive, she would have killed you both instantly," she revealed sadly.

Maya pulled the armored truck safely into a hidden underground parking garage beneath a massive skyscraper.

"We are totally safe here, this is a secure safe house run by federal agents who have been helping me," Maya assured them confidently.

They stepped out of the heavy truck, and David pulled his wife into a desperate, crushing embrace.

For the first time in incredibly long years, their shattered family was finally whole again.

"We have the blue drive, we can turn the money over to the FBI and end this nightmare entirely," David said, kissing her forehead.

Maya's face suddenly turned incredibly pale, and she patted her tactical vest frantically.

"I do not have the flash drive, David," Maya whispered in pure panic.

"Sarah must have kept it securely when I blinded her with the grenade."

David reached quickly into his pocket to check for his cell phone, but his hand brushed against something hard and plastic.

He pulled out the glowing blue flash drive, completely confused by how it magically got there.

"I grabbed it off the floor when the smoke exploded, daddy," little Leo proudly announced to his parents.

Before they could celebrate the brilliant move, the heavy steel doors of the parking garage violently slammed shut.

A terrifying voice echoed loudly through the garage's intercom system.

"You are very resourceful, little boy, but nobody escapes the Viper's coil," the sinister voice threatened.
