Chapter 6 - The Broken Vows

David walked slowly toward us, casually tapping the crowbar against the palm of his hand.
He told Chloe she was a foolish little girl for trying to betray the family that had bought her.
Chloe backed away, terrified of the violent monster my husband had truly become.
I stepped in front of her, shielding the pregnant bride from the man I used to love.
I demanded to know how David could sell his own daughter’s safety for a share of my family’s dirty money.
David laughed, a cold and hollow sound that echoed in the empty cafeteria.
He said he was tired of living in the shadow of my wealthy parents while earning a mediocre salary.
Preston had offered him a guaranteed ten million dollars from the stolen trust fund.
All David had to do was help frame us and legally hand the money over to my brother.
He raised the crowbar and demanded that I hand over the silver USB drive immediately.
If I refused, he promised to beat both of us until we were unconscious and simply take it from my bleeding hands.
I looked around the cafeteria, desperately searching for a weapon or a way out.
There was nowhere to run, and screaming would only alert my parents' security guards waiting upstairs.
I slowly reached into my pocket and pulled out the silver flash drive.
David smiled victoriously and held out his hand to accept his prize.
I looked him dead in the eyes and threw the flash drive directly into the cafeteria’s commercial deep fryer.
The boiling oil bubbled violently as the plastic casing of the drive instantly melted away.
David screamed in absolute rage and lunged forward to strangle me.
Before his hands could reach my throat, the fire alarm above us began blaring with a deafening screech.
Thick chemical foam sprayed down from the ceiling vents, instantly covering the entire kitchen.
Through the chaotic foam and smoke, a squad of heavily armed SWAT officers kicked down the locked doors.
May you like
They were not the corrupt local cops my father had bought.
They were federal agents, and they were pointing their assault rifles directly at David’s chest.
