Chapter 4 - The Erased Truth

The realization hit me like a physical blow to the chest.
My family’s wealth had already infected the local police precinct.
The detective who released me wasn't doing me a favor; he was ensuring I left the station so he could destroy the evidence.
I paced the hospital parking lot, desperately trying to think of a way to fight a billionaire family.
Without that footage, it was my word against the combined testimonies of David, Preston, and my parents.
They had the money, the lawyers, and the corrupt cops on their side.
I felt a crushing wave of despair threaten to pull me under.
My phone vibrated in my hand with a text message from an unknown number.
The message told me to go to the hospital cafeteria and sit at the table in the furthest corner.
I hesitated, wondering if this was another one of David's cruel traps.
But I had absolutely nothing left to lose.
I walked into the dimly lit cafeteria and found a woman sitting in the shadows wearing a large coat.
She lowered her sunglasses, and I gasped in surprise.
It was Chloe, Preston’s beautiful, seemingly perfect new bride.
She looked terrified, constantly checking her surroundings to make sure she wasn't being followed.
I asked her why she was here instead of on her honeymoon with my monster of a brother.
Chloe swallowed hard and told me that she saw everything Preston did in that ballroom.
She said she had known Preston was arrogant, but she never realized he was capable of violence against a child.
She reached into her designer purse and pulled out a thick stack of legal documents.
Chloe explained that Preston had gotten drunk a week before the wedding and bragged about his ultimate plan.
He wasn't just trying to humiliate me out of petty jealousy.
He was trying to trigger the morality clause in my grandfather’s secret trust fund.
I stared at her in confusion, completely unaware that such a trust fund even existed.
Chloe slid the documents across the table and told me to read the highlighted section.

My grandfather had secretly left his entire sixty-million-dollar fortune exclusively to Sophie.
But the money would automatically revert to Preston if Sophie’s guardians were ever convicted of a crime.
