Chapter 9 - The Dead Man's Switch

"Where are you, Elias?" Sebastian roared into the dashboard microphone.

"I'm sitting in a sniper nest exactly two hundred yards away," Elias chuckled softly.

"If you try to step out of that vehicle, I will put a bullet through the windshield."

We were completely trapped inside a steel box with rigged brakes and a sniper aimed at our heads.

I looked back at my sleeping children, refusing to let them die in this dark alley.

"Sebastian, the armored glass can take a few hits, right?" I asked desperately.

"Yes, but if we drive, the brakes won't work, and we will crash at the end of the alley," he said.

I grabbed the steering wheel.

"We don't need brakes if we have a wall," I told him fiercely.

Sebastian looked at me, realizing exactly what I was planning to do.

He reached over and strapped his seatbelt extremely tight.

"Hold on to them," he commanded.

He slammed his foot entirely down on the gas pedal.

The massive V8 engine roared, and the heavy armored car shot forward like a cannonball.

Elias fired instantly.

Three massive sniper rounds spider-webbed the bulletproof windshield, completely blinding us.

Sebastian didn't flinch, keeping the steering wheel perfectly straight.

At the end of the alley was an abandoned brick warehouse.

"Brace yourself!" Sebastian yelled over the roaring engine.

We slammed into the brick wall with a deafening, earth-shattering crash.

The airbags deployed violently, filling the cabin with white powder.

The brick wall collapsed entirely, burying the front of the car in heavy rubble.

We were bruised and battered, but we were alive.

Sebastian kicked his door open, which was now completely shielded by the fallen debris.

He pulled his weapon and disappeared into the shadows to hunt the sniper.

Two minutes later, a single gunshot rang out in the night.
