Chapter 5 - The Mother's Confession

My mother held the silver pistol with trembling hands, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and absolute desperation.

I slowly raised my empty hands into the air, completely unable to process the betrayal standing in front of me.

She told me to take the backpack off and slide it across the velvet table toward her.

I asked her why she was doing this, why she had always hated me so much when I was the only one who cared for my father.

Tears began to spill down her cheeks, ruining her expensive makeup as she finally confessed the darkest family secret.

She told me that I was the only true, biological child of the man we had just buried.

Daniel and Rachel were the hidden products of a long-term affair she had carried on with my father's former business partner.

My father had discovered the truth decades ago, but he stayed in the marriage solely to protect me from a broken home.

He punished my mother by forcing her to live a lie, demanding that she treat me as the outcast to hide his favoritism.

She said she could not let me file the new will because it would leave her other two children completely destitute.

I stared at her, feeling a profound sense of disgust for the woman who had traded my childhood happiness for a pathetic secret.

I took a slow step forward, telling her that she did not have the courage to shoot her only biological son.

Her finger tightened slightly on the trigger, and she warned me not to take another step toward her.

Suddenly, the heavy bank alarm began to blare loudly, flashing bright red lights across the subterranean vault room.

The distraction caused my mother to flinch, and I immediately threw my heavy backpack directly at her face.

The bag struck her arm, knocking the pistol to the floor where it clattered safely out of reach.

I dove toward the door, scooped up my backpack, and sprinted down the secure corridor toward the emergency stairwell.

I ignored her panicked screams and pushed through the heavy fire doors, running up six flights of stairs to the main lobby.

The entire bank was in chaos, with security guards running frantically toward the underground vaults to investigate the alarm.

I blended into the crowd of confused customers and slipped out the front doors onto the busy city street.

I needed to find my trusted lawyer, a brilliant woman named Sarah who had helped me with my small business contracts.

I hailed a taxi and directed the driver to Sarah's modest law firm on the other side of town.

During the ride, I carefully placed the original will into a protective plastic sleeve inside my bag.

When I arrived at the law office, Sarah took one look at my bruised face and immediately locked her front door.

I placed the true will on her desk and explained the terrifying, high-stakes situation I was currently trapped in.

Sarah examined the notary seal, checked the dates, and confirmed that the document was completely legally binding.

She told me we needed to get to the probate courthouse immediately to file it before the strict deadline expired.

She grabbed her car keys, and we walked hurriedly toward the back exit of her office building.

Just as Sarah pushed the back door open, a massive black truck intentionally rammed into her parked car in the alleyway.

Two men stepped out of the truck holding heavy wooden baseball bats, and Daniel stepped out right behind them.
