Chapter 1 - The Broken Wardrobe

Forty days after my father was laid to rest, my family gathered to divide everything he had left behind.

They handed out his house, his vehicle, his savings, and my grandmother’s gold as though I were not even sitting in the room.

When they finally remembered me, the only thing remaining was an old red wardrobe with chipped paint, a warped frame, and one broken leg propped up by a brick.

So I smiled and told them that I would gladly take it.

My mother stood on the porch with her arms folded while my silent uncle and I dragged the heavy wooden cabinet into my rented truck.

She watched me the entire time as though she were silently begging me to change my mind.

I ignored her piercing stare and drove away without saying a final goodbye.

It took me nearly an hour to move the heavy piece of furniture into my small, cramped apartment.

I placed it in the corner of my living room and sat on the floor to catch my breath.

I looked at the peeling red paint and wondered why my father had kept this ugly thing for so many decades.

He was a meticulous man who threw away anything that no longer served a practical purpose.

I crouched down to examine the broken leg and the heavy landscaping brick that had kept it balanced.

When I pulled the brick away, I noticed that the wood underneath the wardrobe was not actually broken.

It had been hollowed out perfectly to accommodate a hidden sliding mechanism.

My heart began to race as I pressed my fingers against the bottom panel and pushed firmly.

The wood gave way with a soft click, sliding back to reveal a secret compartment hidden entirely out of sight.

Inside the dark space rested a thick, leather-bound ledger and a heavy iron key engraved with an unusual crest.

I pulled the ledger out, brushed off the dust, and slowly opened the yellowed pages.

The first page contained a handwritten note from my father, dated just one week before he went into the hospital.

The note said that if I was reading this, I was the only person in the family who truly understood the value of loyalty.

I turned to the next page and saw a meticulous list of bank accounts, offshore trusts, and safety deposit box numbers.

The total amount listed at the bottom of the page was staggering, exceeding six million dollars.

My hands trembled as I realized the meager savings my family had divided earlier was nothing but a carefully orchestrated decoy.

Suddenly, my cell phone buzzed loudly on the kitchen counter, breaking the silence of my apartment.

I answered the call and heard my brother Daniel speaking in a rushed, panicked tone.

He told me that our mother had made a terrible mistake and that he needed to buy the wardrobe back from me immediately.

He offered me five thousand dollars in cash if I opened my door right now.

I walked toward my window, pulled the blinds back just an inch, and looked down at the street below.

Daniel was already parked right outside my building, and he was not alone.

Sitting in the passenger seat of his car was a massive, heavily tattooed man holding a steel crowbar.
