Chapter 10 - The True Inheritance

I carried the heavy package into my new, pristine kitchen and placed it carefully on the marble countertop.

I grabbed a pair of scissors and sliced through the thick layer of brown shipping tape.

I peeled back the cardboard flaps, expecting to find a housewarming gift from Sarah or a missing legal document.

Instead, resting at the very bottom of the box was the heavy, chipped landscaping brick that had once propped up my father's broken wardrobe.

I reached into the box and carefully lifted the heavy brick, noticing a piece of folded white paper taped to the bottom.

I peeled the paper off, unfolded it with trembling hands, and read the typed message written in bold black ink.

"You really thought your father was the one hiding from us all these years."

"He didn't build that massive fortune through brilliant investments, Evan."

"He stole every single penny of it from our syndicate, and you just kindly painted a massive target on your own back by cashing those bonds."

"Enjoy your beautiful new house, because we will be coming to visit you very soon."
