Chapter 7 - The Cold White Room

The incessant, rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor slowly dragged me out of the deep, suffocating darkness of my unconscious state.
I blinked my heavy eyes open, desperately trying to focus on the stark, blindingly white ceiling of a sterile hospital room.
My hands instantly and instinctively flew down to touch my stomach, searching desperately for the familiar, comforting bump of my pregnancy.
My heart shattered into a million pieces when my shaking fingers felt nothing but a completely flat, heavily bandaged abdomen.
I let out a weak, agonizing sob of pure panic, desperately believing that the absolute worst tragedy had completely come true.
The hospital door slowly pushed open, and a tired-looking doctor entered the room with a highly serious, incredibly grim expression on his face.
He quickly rushed to my bedside to calm me down, gently explaining that the emergency surgery had been incredibly complicated and dangerous.
"Your son is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and he is fighting incredibly hard for his fragile life," the doctor explained softly.
Tears of profound relief streamed rapidly down my face as I realized my beautiful baby boy was actually still alive.
The doctor warned me that the severe blood loss and premature birth meant my son was entirely dependent on life support machines.
Before I could demand to be wheeled into the NICU, my father walked into the hospital room looking completely exhausted and deeply furious.
He sat heavily in the chair beside my bed and gently took my trembling hand in his strong, protective grip.
"Vivienne, there is a serious, highly dangerous legal development that you absolutely need to know about right now," my father stated grimly.
I stared at him in complete confusion, assuming that my deranged husband was currently rotting away in a high-security prison cell.
My father explained that the dangerous cartel Dominic owed money to possessed incredibly deep, heavily corrupted political connections in the city.
They had aggressively utilized a highly corrupt judge to grant Dominic an immediate, incredibly suspicious bail release just hours after his arrest.
The cartel needed Dominic out of jail to quickly facilitate the massive repayment of his two million dollar gambling debt.
My blood ran completely cold as I realized a violent, armed psychopath was currently roaming free on the city streets.
But the terrifying news did not end with his highly illegal, completely unearned freedom.
My father pulled a stack of heavily stamped legal documents from his briefcase and placed them gently on my hospital bed.
"Dominic has somehow managed to file a completely fabricated, emergency legal injunction against you," my father revealed with absolute disgust.

Dominic had maliciously claimed that I was completely mentally unstable and entirely unfit to raise a fragile, premature child.
He had successfully convinced the corrupt judge to grant him immediate, full physical custody of the baby currently fighting for his life.
